King Crimson

King Crimson is a giant among the progressive rock loving crowd. Arguably the first prog rock band ever debuting as one of the many opening acts at the famous 15 July 1969 Hyde Park concert that closed with the Rolling Stones as main attraction. As prog became ‘the music’ in the first half of the seventies, bands like Yes, Genesis and Emerson, Lake & Palmer became the pillars of the style, while King Crimson, still making excellent music, could barely keep the same group formation for more than two albums. Most of the times, not even. Yet of all these bands that died out and resurged thanks to a nostalgia trend, King Crimson is the only one that seemed to have always managed to update their music without ever feeling less progressive.

This compilation was conceived for the uninitiated. It has most of the more famous and loved numbers without any ten minute themes or passages. Compiled in Oct 2016. All but one file are @320.

Focus

Arguably the best, most respected progressive rock band to come from the Netherlands. The musical brainchild of keyboardist Thijs van Leer, Focus was at its best when Leer utilized along with his, the musical ideas of guitarist Jan Akkerman and drummer Pierre van der Linden.

The band still exists today, having reformed in the new millennium and they can still put on an impressive show, although only Thijs van Leer and Pierre van der Linden remain. In this compilation we have what I consider an excellent entry point for first timers, comprising the output between 1970-1975. I’ve also included a text file with all the various formations of the bands initial nine year lifespan before they called it quits in 1978. Compiled in Jan 2018. All files @320.

Captain Beefheart

Another one of those geniuses that are not for everyone. Known for championing opaque melodies that would bug most people. Although Beefheart has recorded some incredibly interesting and musically challenging stuff, not every album he’s put out is a fine flowing easy listening piece of sonic art.

Tired of having to jump around albums back when I was still new to all his output, I decided to assemble in one CD all the tracks that I loved. This is one of my older compilations, dating back to 2009. All files in wav.

The Velvet Underground

Time changes perceptions of things. Hard to believe but nobody cared about The Velvet Underground back in the sixties. You’d be hard pressed to find a fan in the US back then. And very few had even heard of them outside the US. Their public initially came from the art world thanks to the Andy Warhol connections. And even those were half posers, more curious about Warhol’s interest in the band then real admiration for or understanding of the music or lyrics.

By 1968/69, there was a fraction of a following taking place, mostly in college campuses. Their music was clearly not for everyone. It is said that the few kids that did buy their first album, all started bands of their own. A statement that is more symbolic than factual, it was really only after Lou Reed’s solo career started to take off in the seventies that music critics really started to go back to listen and write favorably about VU.

I find Reed’s work in the seventies and eighties brimming with valid artistic merit. And as for his work with The Velvet Underground, it is so against the tide of what people were doing lyrically and musically back then, that you could say that these songs are downright courageous musical statements. Compilation created and concluded in Jun 2018, all files @320.
