Frank Zappa Compositions Recorded By Other Artists

I made one of these for the Beatles and had so much fun that I ended up making four more. Listening to an album by The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and surprised that they had recorded a Zappa song made me curious to find other covers. After Franks passing it became more common for bands to cover Zappa compositions, but the ones from the seventies are my favorite. This compilation was conceived and created in Dec 2013. Files are mostly wav with the remainder in @320 and one wma.

“Most people wouldn’t know good music if it came and bit them on the ass.” – Frank Zappa

The Damned

I first heard the Damned in 1983, when the album ‘Strawberries’ had just come out. I was at a party and boy did that album make an impact. I would say that along with The Buzzcocks, The Damned are the most fun filled punk band of them all. Hard not to smile with the sassy humor of their lyrics and arrangements. Arguably the best musicians within the realm of the original punk bands of that era, I think. The Clash may be the all around favorite and certainly the ones that went the farthest while The Buzzcocks are the most melodic and pop friendliest amongst the first wave of punks. But The Damned are remembered as possibly the most anarchist bunch of musical mayhem that ever got recorded. This compilation celebrates the fun and lunacy of this extraordinary band. This music should be played loud! Conceived and created in Nov 2006. All files are @320.

A Collection of Forgotten Late Sixties British Recordings

A complete CD’s worth of delightful recordings mostly forgotten by time, recorded in the UK on the cusp of the seventies. Although from lesser known bands with less achievements; all recordings are pretty cool and the CD as a whole is a very enjoyable listen. Hopefully you will concur.

This compilation was originally conceived and created in June 2013. In the end of Feb 2019, wishing to upgrade bit rate, I once again altered a few song choices and re-sequenced the play order. Concluded and posted 26 Feb 2019. All files are either @320 or wav.

Nina Hagen

Born and raised in East Berlin in a time where the divisiveness of ideologies created fears and nightmares generally shaped in the form of a mushroom cloud. The iron curtain may have been a metaphoric analogy for the communist culture but the Berlin wall was very much concrete. Literally.
Nina Hagen was already considered an opera prodigy at nine. In 1976, following exceptional circumstances, Nina Hagen and her mother managed to receive permission to leave East Berlin and cross the wall, Nina settling in Hamburg. Shortly thereafter, CBS signed her and suggested that to acclimate with western culture, that she should travel Europe. Nina Hagen landed in London at the height of the punk movement in early 1977. Returning to Germany in the summer, she formed the Nina Hagen Band releasing two albums that caught peoples attention. Her theatrical vocals which draws heavily from her operatic training and her capability to mix and match genres in a dissonant mix of punk, funk, reggae, eastern and opera, makes her very unique. Besides German and English, her later albums shows her singing in French, Italian and Sanskrit. There’s nothing typical about Nina Hagen. Compilation created and completed on Jan 2019. All files are @320 except two in wav.

The Alice Cooper Band

Before the solo career of Alice Cooper there was the Alice Cooper band. An American band from Phoenix, Arizona, formed in 1964 as The Spiders by three high school classmates Furnier, Dunaway and Buxton. Becoming a big fish in a small pond, in 1967 The Spiders moved to Los Angeles with dreams of success that didn’t happen. They changed their name to Alice Cooper, described as an innocent and wholesome name which was a direct contrast to the image of its members. Despite the lack of public interest found in LA, they persevered touring mid-America and found their initial fans in places like Michigan and Ohio.

Adding elements of theatrics to their shows, the lead singer Vince Furnier, whilst creating his character, adopted the name of the band as his own. This would later prove to facilitate fan alliance once he went solo, effectively taking all of the bands fans as his own. Despite Furnier’s successful career as Alice Cooper, his solo albums never managed the same level of critical and public success as the output of the band Alice Cooper between 1971-1973. Exception being his first solo release Welcome To My Nightmare. This compilation spans all six Alice Cooper albums released between 1969-1973. All files @320 except two in wav.
