Sparks

Sparks is one of those bands that either you love them or you don’t. They can be seen as weird musically and visually but in a humorous sarcastic way. Essentially, Sparks is the music expression of brothers Ronald and Russell Mael, two California kids who began their musical journey in the late sixties. Formed a band initially named Halfneslon which recorded and released two albums plus a third now as Sparks, that achieved absolutely no commercial impact to speak of. The brothers moved to England in 1973, reassembled the band with British musicians and produced three amazing albums that put them on the map. By 1976, the Mael brothers returned to the US, staying this time on the east coast, reformed the band and began a new chapter for themselves that was slightly more dance oriented as so became the times. This compilation was originally conceived and created Aug 2013. I’ve upgraded all files @320 and expanded slightly the original playlist in Feb 2019.

David Bowie

Disk Title: The David Bowie Compilation – Volume 3

David Bowie changes directions of his career and once again leaves the rock n roll world. He stars on Broadway in the play ‘The Elephant Man’, playing a man with elephantiasis without the use of any make-up. He impresses critics portraying convincingly by exclusive use of corporal expression. Bowie records the song ‘Under Pressure’ with Freddie Mercury and his band Queen; the song becoming a great commercial success worldwide. Accepts a prominent role in the Tony Scott movie ‘The Hunger’ where off screen he has a quick romance with actress Susan Sarandon. He then records the theme song for the movie ‘Cat People’ co-credited and produced by Giorgio Moroder, which will also be a commercial success to a smaller degree. Bowie then accepts a role in the movie ‘Happy Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ a British-Nippon production directed by Nagisa Oshima and filmed in the south Pacific.

Returning from Asia, he contracts Chic bassist Nile Rogers to produce his next album ‘Let’s Dance’. The following tour named ‘The Serious Moonlight Tour’ will prove to be of unprecedented scale for Bowie, public demand forcing him to play sold out stadiums for the first time in his life. His following albums in the eighties will sell considerably less. Bowie will lend his talents once again to movie soundtracks as well as acting in movies like ‘Absolute Beginners’ and ‘Labyrinth’. After another world tour, this one called ‘The Glass Spider Tour’, which will include Peter Frampton on guitar, Bowie does the unexpected and helps form a band.

This new band gets called Tin Machine. Formed by himself plus brothers Hunt and Tony Sales , respectively bass and drums; both of which Bowie had toured with as bandmates back in 1977 as Iggy Pops band. Plus newcomer guitarist Reeves Gabrels, who had played in Bowie’s album ‘Lodger’ back in 1978 but never toured with him till now. With Tin Machine, during the short span of three years of their existence, they released two studio and one live album. Unlike any other Bowie project before, all members of Tin Machine are equal partners, with each person responsible for their own individual expenses and the profits distributed equally among the four.

Frank Zappa

Found a CD I burned some time ago with this compilation of Frank Zappa instrumental compositions that are essentially a number of excelently played guitar solos treated as full compositions in their own right. So if you like guitar solos and are one of the many who have only heard of Frank Zappa, and not really heard Frank Zappa, then you might like this compilation as a starting point. I have as of yet found no notations as to when I created this, but I remember the car I was driving listening to this; so it’s probably from 2006. All files are wav.
