Sergio Dias Baptista, Rita Lee Jones & Arnaldo Dias Baptista
One of the most amazing foreign bands I’ve encountered. Os Mutantes ou simply Mutantes from São Paulo, Brazil, began as a trio composed by Arnaldo Baptista, girlfriend Rita Lee and younger brother Sergio Dias. In a country living through a military dictatorship, foreign music was generally frowned upon, so in terms of record sales they were never a big selling ticket. And yet their inventiveness, satirical and musical humor, well thought out and executed vocal arrangements, matched with the high quality musicianship of their members, not to mention the personal charisma of the original trio created an impact on almost every young musician in their country for years to come. Not to mention along with the Beatles, helped popularize the electric guitar mostly and electric instruments in general in Brazil. Practically every Brazilian rock band from the seventies owes something to Os Mutantes.
Between 1967-1968 they became the house band to a group of artists championing the concept of mixing foreign influences to local styles, be it in music, paintings, movie or theatre. This new type of Brazilian art form was named Tropicalia and has been subject to reinterpretations over the years. By 1970, Os Mutantes became a five piece outfit with drummer Ronaldo ‘Dinho’ Leme and bass player Liminha added as official members. The music also became a harder rock tending towards progressive rock, yet never totally losing their characteristic sense of careless humor. After Rita Lee left at the end of 1972, followed by Arnaldo Baptista less than six months later, the band began a period of rotating formations with the only constant being the last original member Sergio Dias who eventually called it a day in 1978.
During the eighties and nineties, Os Mutantes have been discovered by the USA and Europe. David Byrne in particular invested in producing a compilation of their music to the American public. Curt Cobain and Sean Lennon have both gone on record talking about their admiration for the band and the musical mind behind it, Arnaldo Baptista.
In 2006, because of an exhibition in London about the Tropicalia movement in the sixties, a series of undefinable coincidences afforded by serendipity reunited Sergio, Arnaldo, Liminha and Dinho to play together under the initial proposition of a one only presentation at the Barbican Theater in London as part of the aforementioned Tropicália event. Rita Lee declined the invitation stating that her time machine only points towards the future, never the past. Sergio, Arnaldo and Dinho along with seven further musicians brought Mutantes back to life as a Tropicalia based nostalgia ensemble and the band is still in action to this date, albeit only Sergio remains.
This compilation was initially conceived and compiled in Set 2015, however, definitive song sequence of both discs completed in Jan 2019. All files are @320 or wav.

Terry Draper, John Woloschuck & Dee Long are Klaatu
The name Klaatu is taken from a scene in the science-fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) where the words Klaatu barada niko brings the sentinel robot named Gort to life. When the band Klaatu released their first album, speculations occurred that these recordings might actually be The Beatles under a pseudonym. Klaatu is actually a Canadian trio of studio musicians that managed a collection of very well crafted songs. The Beatles angle helped sell records but ultimately destroyed any real interest in the band once the ludicrous fantasy was confirmed false. Personally, I never thought they were fantastic but they do have a number of very nice, well crafted songs committed to tape. Compilation created and completed in Dec 2018. All files are wav.
